The Fifth Installment of Gourmondo Gives
We are pleased to announce the fifth addition in the Gourmondo Gives line, The Treehouse box! Established in 1988 by a group of social workers, Treehouse was founded on the belief that kids in foster care deserve a community committed to their success. Treehouse is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization, and Washington’s leader in addressing the academic and essential needs of youth in foster care. Initially funded by their local community, today Treehouse is powered by generous donors, talented staff and many committed partners, including Gourmondo!
At Gourmondo, an important goal as a company has been to provide support within our local community. Partnering with organizations that work to catch individuals before they fall, providing support in times of hardship, and working to uplift the futures of children and young adults is an integral part of Gourmondo’s mission as a local business. By supporting the individuals and organizations around us, we are not only strengthening the bonds of our community, but the relationships within it.
In order to make a positive impact on an individual’s life, creating sustainable and long-term change is an important and often overlooked factor. Organizations like Treehouse work to implement change based on the unique needs of each youth and support them throughout their transition into adulthood.
At Treehouse, over 8,000 youth in foster care are served across Washington state each year. Youth in foster care face a variety of challenges, many of which have a long-term effect on their academic progress. The average youth in foster care experiences three placement changes and the loss of six months of academic progress per move. As a result, less than 50% of youth in foster care graduate from high school. With these statistics in mind, Treehouse works to ensure academic support and graduation equity for youth in foster care.
Treehouse has created three unique programs to support youths at each point in their academic journey:
- Graduation Success helps youth in foster care engage and invest in their education and future.
- Launch Success focuses on providing continued support to young adults after high school until they achieve stable housing, a degree or credential, and a living wage.
- Educational Advocacy works in partnership with the Department of Children, Youth, and Families, as well as schools, social workers, foster families and youth in foster care to resolve difficult issues and remove barriers to school success.
In 2017, Treehouse achieved a major goal when youth nearly doubled their high school graduation rate in just 5 years. By providing the essential support youth need to succeed, Treehouse has watched students become more self-determined and invested in their education than ever before.
